SALT LAKE CITY — A rifle stolen more than 30 years ago out of a truck in Salt Lake City will be returned to its owner Wednesday morning.

In November 1977, Richard Pittenger’s truck was parked in the area of 1700 South and State Street when it was broken into and his 20-gauge shotgun was stolen, according to a press release from Salt Lake City police Tuesday.

Pittenger had recently purchased the rifle. According to the release, Pittenger filed a police report, which included the serial number of the weapon.

Thirty-seven years later the shotgun was discovered by an Oregon State Trooper.

After running the serial number, the trooper discovered the rifle had been reported stolen out of Salt Lake City.

Det. Rod Van Scoy with Salt Lake City police tracked down Pittenger to inform him his stolen property had been located.
