ST. GEORGE, Utah – Authorities are searching for a suspect accused of using a forklift to try to steal an ATM from the Dixie Center.

According to the St. George Police Department, one of the custodians caught the suspect in the act at about 3:30 a.m.

The suspect abandoned the forklift and ran out the front doors when he saw the worker. Police said the employee immediately called authorities.

“He wasn’t successful,” said St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain. “He caused a lot of damage to the ATM when he was trying to rip it out of the floor with a forklift, but he didn’t get away with any money.”

Officials said they aren’t sure how the suspect got into the building because there are no signs of forced entry.

St. George officers are reviewing surveillance video and have not released a description of the suspect at this time.

The St. George Police Department would like to speak with anyone who has information. Tipsters can contact police at (435) 627-4300.
