HYRUM, Utah -- An alleged argument between two brothers-in-law left one dead in Hyrum Tuesday, according to officials with Cache County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to a home near 84 N. 600 East on a possible homicide, according to Lt. Doyle Peck.

Officers found 40-year-old Provo resident Aaron Smith outside when they arrived.

He told police he was the one who fired the gun inside the house, surrendered and was detained.

Police found 37-year-old Robert J. Van Hermert dead in the house, which he was renting from Hyrum City.

Authorities said the brothers-in-law were arguing over property issues before the shooting.

Officers said at some point during the dispute Van Hermert pulled out a gun which made Smith also take out his gun.

Shots were fired and Van Hermert was killed in the altercation.

No arrests have been made at this point.
