SALT LAKE CITY – A bank robbery downtown escalated when the robber threatened one of the customers and it’s likely because of what the customer was doing at the time.

Salt Lake City officers said they are working to find a suspect accused of robbing a Zions Bank near 7th E. and 4th S. at about 5 p.m. Monday.

Lt. Carl Menino said a man carrying a gun walked in and demanded money from a teller.

At the time, a woman inside the bank was on the phone with her mortgage broker.

The woman, who didn’t want to be identified told Fox 13 what happened when the alleged robber noticed she was on the phone.

“I said ‘No, I`m at the Zions Bank on 4th S., call the police now,’ and the guy saw me, that I was on the phone, and he came over and he said, `Put the phone down now,’ so I put the phone down but I left it turned on so he could hear everything that was going on.”

The woman said she had her dog with her and when he barked at the suspect, the man pointed his gun at them.

She said the man left the bank with a bag full of money after that.

Authorities described the suspect as a heavy-set man who is about 5’8″ in his mid to late twenties with dark hair and skin.
