CARSON, Calif. – Real Salt Lake sought to clinch a playoff berth Sunday night as they squared off against Chivas USA but instead ended the night with a loss.

Chivas USA took the lead in the 47th minute on an RSL giveaway that allowed forward Erick Torres to line up a shot that went off the crossbar, and forward Felix Borja knocked in the rebound.

RSL had possession for 74 percent of the game, according to a press release from the team, but that still wasn’t enough time to overcome the 1-0 deficit. This is the second game the two teams have played during the regular season, with June 28th’s match also resulting in a 1-0 loss for RSL. Chivas USA was in last place in MLS rankings prior to the match.

Despite Sunday’s defeat, Real Salt Lake remains in third place in the Western Conference, with a record of 13-8-10 and a total of 49 points, which puts them 11 points behind Seattle Sounders FC and LA Galaxy—who lead the league. There are three regular season games left to play.

RSL will host the San Jose Earthquakes Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium, and the game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
