Update: The same day the Kearns mother accused of the crime was in court, the newborn she allegedly tossed in her neighbor's trash has been released from the hospital.

Unified Police said the baby girl has improved after not being fed for days after she was born and is now being cared for by the Department of Child and Family Services.

SALT LAKE CITY - Alicia Marie Englert made her first court appearance Wednesday, a little more than two weeks after she allegedly gave birth to her baby and then dumped the newborn in the neighbor's trash can in Kearns.

Wearing a yellow jail jumpsuit and in handcuffs, Englert quietly made her way to the podium.

We learned that she is now being represented by local defense attorney Suzanne Gustin.

Englert is charged with attempted murder after prosecutors say she secretly gave birth to a baby girl and then did not feed the infant for more than a day before ultimately dumping her newborn in a neighbor's trash can.

But that neighbor heard the baby crying and notified Englert’s father and the police.

Englert was questioned and, according to detectives, she confessed to the crime and was arrested.

Englert's parents claim their daughter has a learning disability and cannot comprehend what she's done.

Meanwhile her new attorney says it's going to take some time to sort out everything.

Englert's parents left court without making any public comment.

But off camera, Robert Englert said again that his daughter has a learning disability and he hopes the public does not rush to judgment.

Alicia Englert's next court appearance is now scheduled for Oct. 6.

At that point they will also discuss the possibility of reducing or bail.

She is currently being held in the Salt Lake County Jail on $500,000 cash-only bond.
