SALT LAKE CITY – Primary Children’s Hospital received a quarter of a million dollars recently from an automaker who is donating funds to help fight childhood cancer.

The Hyundai Hope on Wheels program and Salt Lake City Hyundai dealers gave $250,000 to Primary Children’s Hospital, and the organization has been working to fight childhood cancer for about 16 years—with a portion of each car sale going toward the Hope on Wheels campaign.

Doctor Joshua Schifman said the money, which the team at the hospital was awarded after submitting a competitive grant application, will go toward helping the children at their hospital.

He said: “We’re going to use this money to individualize treatment for children with cancer. To look at the tumors and try to understand: What is the best therapy for each individual child with cancer at Primary Children’s Hospital?”

The money was awarded during a Hope on Wheels Handprint Ceremony held at the hospital Wednesday and is part of the campaign’s efforts relating to National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Since the effort began 16 years ago, the campaign has given about $87 million to the cause, including $980,000 to Primary Children’s Hospital, according to a press release from event organizers.
