SALT LAKE CITY – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is putting a collection of rare documents from the church’s early history on display, and the exhibit opens Thursday.

The Foundations of Faith exhibit will feature documents that include a portion of the original, hand-written manuscript of The Book of Mormon as well as portions of the journal of Joseph Smith, who founded the LDS Church and was its first president.

The exhibit features those items and about two dozen other books and manuscripts. It will open at the LDS Church History Library, 15 E. North Temple in Salt Lake City, Thursday.

Elder Steven E. Snow of the LDS Church's First Quorum of the Seventy said this is the first time many of the documents, which he called some of the LDS Church's most cherished items, have been on display together.

“Never really had these all together at one time, because we've kept them in a very secure vault and not had them out, really, on public display,” he said.

The exhibit took about two years to put together, and organizers said a great deal of care went into the presentation and conservation of the documents. Click here for more information about the documents on display and the exhibit.
