SALT LAKE CITY — An individual was shot in the leg after winning a fist fight at a party that officials said got out of control in Salt Lake City early Sunday morning.

Police responded to reports of shots fired at a house party in the area of Navajo Avenue and Hayes Avenue in Salt Lake City around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Lt. Craig Gleason, Salt Lake City Police Department, said an individual had thrown a party and that party had attracted more people than expected, including people the party thrower didn’t know.

“In today’s day and age, you know with the connectivity and media we have, kids can’t have a party at their house and invite their six friends,” Gleason said. “What happens is they text their friends, and their friends, and their friends—and this was a party that got out of control.”

A fight occurred at some point during the party between a resident and one of the people who had come to the party despite not knowing those who lived there.

“A person who lives here and one of those people, who apparently is unknown, agreed to fight,” Gleason said. “After the fight was over, a third party brought a firearm to the loser of the fight, who shot the winner.”

Gleason said the victim was shot in the leg. The victim was taken to a hospital to receive treatment.

Police said witnesses were not providing good information about the suspect and so far they have not yet released a description of the suspect. FOX 13 News will have more information as it becomes available.
