PROVO, Utah – Jamaal Williams, who plays football for Brigham Young University, announced Friday he had been suspended and would miss at least one game in the upcoming season.

Williams spoke to reporters during BYU’s first day of practice, and he said he admits fault in the incident that led to his suspension. See the video above for comments from Williams as well as his teammates and coach.

The suspension is for at least one game, Williams said. That game is BYU’s season opener on August 29 against Connecticut. Williams said he had been practicing with the second-string players as part of the suspension.

Court documents indicate Williams was charged for underage drinking on February 21 of this year; Williams told reporters the suspension was related to this previous incident but also involved something new. He did not provide further details about the cause of the suspension.

BYU requires students to follow an honor code, which prohibits consuming alcohol even for those who are legally able to do so.

Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall said the school would be dealing with the matter internally and that was all he had to say on the subject.

Williams said he has learned from the experience and will not make the same mistakes again.
