SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – About 40 apartments were evacuated as a precaution Sunday afternoon as SWAT teams members responded to an incident involving a man with a gun.

Police received a report just before 1 p.m. Sunday of an armed, suicidal person at 776 West San Marino Drive (9880 South).

According to a press release from the South Jordan Police Department, 34-year-old Kenneth John Perna-Rutsky had been in a verbal argument with his fiancée, during which he brandished a handgun and reportedly threatened to shoot his fiancée.

Officials stated the man then pointed the gun at himself and attempted suicide, but the gun did not fire. That’s when the victim fled the scene and called 911.

Police responded and were unable to make contact with the suspect. Officers evacuated about 40 apartments as a precaution, and after negotiating for about four hours SWAT team members entered the apartment.

The suspect surrendered without incident and was taken to a hospital for an evaluation before being transferred to the Salt Lake County Adult Detention Center, where he was booked for aggravated assault-domestic related.

All residents were allowed to return to their apartments before 5 p.m. There were no injuries reported in connection with this incident.
