SPANISH FORK, Utah -- Spanish Fork police released a final report after a Lindon police officer murdered his family and committed suicide at their Spanish Fork home in January.

Police say Josh and Kelly Boren kept their troubled marriage well hidden but separated in the fall of 2013. The court documents detail a heated argument over text message with Josh wanting to save the marriage but Kelly wanting a divorce.

"What we've been told is that he drugged Kelly and raped her on multiple occasions and videotaped those events," said Lindon Police Chief Cody Cullimore.

Josh Boren’s therapist told investigators Josh crushed Ambien and put it in his wife’s protein shakes.

Police say Kelly Boren never reported the crimes, possibly to protect her husband’s career.

However, after the January 16 murders, investigators found a journal in Josh Boren’s apartment that appears to confirm the sexual assaults against Kelly and detail Boren’s troubled past.

The 150-page police report states Josh Boren was sexually abused as a child by men his mother dated and he blamed his mom for not protecting him.

The day of the murders, the Borens got into a heated argument via text message and Josh Boren feared he would lose his children in the divorce.

"I think it all unraveled and he realized he was going to lose his family because of his actions," Cullimore said.

Spanish Fork investigators say Boren, who was a respected Utah County officer, used his police-issued Glock handgun to kill his wife Kelly, their two kids and his mother-in-law.

Initially, some suspected that because the couple were body builders, steroids may have fueled Josh Boren’s rage but Spanish Fork police say toxicology results show none of the family members, including Josh Boren, had any substances in their system.

Meanwhile, as for the gun used in the crime, it will be destroyed at the request of the Lindon Police Department.
