CLEARFIELD, Utah – A man was killed in a hit and run accident that occurred in Clearfield Tuesday night, and police have arrested a man who is believed to have caused the crash and then fled the scene.

Police initially responded to a business near Freeport Center on a report of a protective order violation, and when the officer arrived the suspect fled and the officer pursued.

After a short time the officer terminated the pursuit and returned to the initial scene to continue the investigation. According to a press release from the Clearfield City Police Department, minutes later the dispatch center received reports of a hit and run accident at 700 South and State Street.

Emergency responders located a seriously injured male, who was given aid at the scene and then taken to a hospital. The victim, later identified as 27-year-old Kelly Allred of Clearfield, passed away due to his injuries just before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police spoke with witnesses, and after gathering information and descriptions of the vehicle they issued an attempt to locate for 37-year-old Jose Antonio Cortez Orozco of North Salt Lake. Officers believed Orozco was both the suspect from the first call and the suspect in the hit and run accident.

Orozco was located shortly before 11 p.m., and according to the press release officers with the North Salt Lake Police Department “identified evidence on the vehicle indicating Orozco was likely involved in the auto-pedestrian accident in Clearfield. The suspect was then transported back to Clearfield by officers from the NSL Police Department and was subsequently interviewed by Clearfield Detectives.”

Orozco was booked into the Davis County Jail on charges that include leaving the scene of an accident, automobile homicide and a protective order violation.
