SANDY, Utah -- Utah Republican leaders blasted the overreach of the federal government and discussed the political issues of the day at the state GOP convention in Sandy Saturday.

Thousands of Republican joined the state's dominate party to vote for candidates and see the direction its taking.

The overwhelming theme was Utah should fight back against government intrusion.

“We will continue to fight against the president with his unilateral pen every single step of the way,” said Rep. Jason Chaffetz.

Leaders called upon Utah voters to be part of the campaign to win the U.S. Senate back.

Republican leaders repeatedly spoke against overreach by the federal government and demanded Utah gain control of federal lands and resources.

“If Utah land issues are not going to be discussed no issues are going to be discussed in congress. And I can back it up with the chairmanship,” said Rep. Rob Bishop.

The delegates at the convention voted for incumbents Rob Bishop, Chris Stewart, and Jason Chaffetz to represent them on the ballot this November. Mia love is again the party's pick for the fourth district. She lost the campaign to democrat Jim Matheson in the last election.

“Washington wants to control our land and regulate our lives. Washington is ruining America,” Love said.

And Amendment 3 continues to be top of mind for the GOP leadership, who say they are looking to defend the definition of marriage.

“Whether we win or not at the 10th Circuit, your AG will take this case all the way to the Supreme Court,” said Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes.
