SALT LAKE CITY -- A group of local film makers are turning their love of live action role play into a movie -- or what they call LARP.

“LARP stands for live action role play, there's as many different types of LARP as there are genres of movies and video games, and books,” said movie special effect director Jake Dickey.

Dickey and a few of his friends started working on the script three years ago, but it was a local film contest that gave them the boost they needed to make a feature film--LARP: The Movie.

“What really gave us the jolt forward was the Downtown Alliance has a video contest that they do every year to promote downtown Salt Lake, and we all live downtown so we were like, 'This is right up our alley,'” said writer and director Nicholas Dunn.

The group won the contest, click here to see their entry.

Utah has inspired their film making in several ways. They said local professionals in the industry have donated their time and equipment, and Utah offers an ideal setting.

“We wanted to make this film for as wide of an audience as possible, so it's not necessarily a Utah story, but there are just enough hints in there that if you are from Utah you will recognize it,” said Connor Rickman.

The movie goes into production this fall and will hit some theaters and possibly Netflix next spring. The group has put together a video promoting their movie, which is embedded below. Click here to visit the movie's website.
