PROVO, Utah – Authorities located an autistic man whose whereabouts had been unknown for several hours while rescue crews searched Sunday, and they said they worried he faced danger due to factors relating to his low functioning skills.

Officials said at about 6:45 p.m. the man had been located by a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter and was safe.

Lt. Matthew Siufanua of the Provo Police Department said the search began in the area near 728 S. Slate Canyon drive, and they were looking for a 25-year-old man.

Siufanua said the man is non-verbal and has low-functioning skills, and he said because of this he could potentially have been in danger.

Officials said he has the mentality of a 3-year-old child. The man had last been seen heading up Slate Canyon.
