SALT LAKE CITY – About 300 people were evacuated due to a gas leak near two apartment buildings in Salt Lake City Wednesday.

Two multi-story buildings near 530 South 400 East were evacuated after gas was found inside the walls.

Capt. Darren Baum of the Salt Lake City Fire Department said the leak was between the two apartment buildings. He said the leak was in an underground pipe, and he said the gas got into the soil in the area.

Crews with Questar Gas found a leak in an underground pipe and have turned the gas off. Salt Lake City Fire Department officials said they are waiting until the gas levels in the building come down again before lifting the evacuation. The cause of the leak is unknown.

Baum said around 7:30 p.m they expected to be able to allow people back into the apartments in about two hours. There were no injuries reported.

Buam said they encourage people to call 911 or a fire department when they smell natural gas.
