EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah -- Family members who survived a dangerous crash earlier this year are being honored for wearing their seat belts.

The family was honored by the Utah Department of Public Safety Monday at Mountain Trails Elementary School, where students have made a pledge to buckle up.

On Jan. 23, Krista Turner was driving her minivan on SR-73 with her three kids. One child was in a car seat, the second in a booster seat and the third in a seat belt. A car coming the opposite direction hit them, causing the van to spin and slide down the road. When the van came to a stop, all four family members were hanging by their seat belts.

Turner said buckling up is part of her family's routine, and she hopes students can make a habit, and she hopes students can make it a habit now.

"I realized what could have happened and it brings up a lot of gratitude," Turner said. "I'm so grateful they're here, I'm so grateful I was able to hug them at night, and know that we were all still here together as a family."

The Turner family has made it their mission to share their message about the importance of seat belts.
