SALT LAKE CITY – Utahns competed in the Out-Climb Cancer Challenge Saturday, ascending a 24-story building over and over again to raise funds for research.

The event was held at the Wells Fargo Center, 299 South Main St., and the participants bore chips that tracked their speed as well as the total number of ascents they made.

All funds raised by the event are donated toward research efforts at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Jen Murano, a development officer for Huntsman Cancer Foundation, said the event allows people to play a part in the fight against cancer.

“This is incredible because it gets people who can’t write a $10,000 check to be able to come out, register, and raise $100,” Murano said. “Everyone can fundraise $100, and they can give to cancer and knowing that their dollars goes to work in the labs to fight cancer.”

Records of the event from 2006 to 2013 are available for men and women. In 2013, Chuck Konopa, Pete Stoughton and Jason Berry set the record for most climbs with 47. Rachel Dekker Moody set the women’s record in 2013 with 40 climbs. Records from this year’s event were not available at the time this article was written.
