RIVERTON, Utah -- Riverton High School’s prom queen relinquished her crown, giving it to a special needs student.

Kendra Jean Muller, 16, was paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair three years ago. She was voted prom queen last Saturday night.

But Kendra did not keep her crown or title. Instead she gave it to a special needs student, Amanda Belnap.

"I was really honored to get prom queen and I was really happy about it, but I felt that Amanda would be even more happy and more excited to get it,” Kendra said.

Amanda is also a junior at Riverton High. Although Kendra and Amanda do not know each other well, Kendra though Amanda deserved to win.

"I know her well enough to know that she spreads joy everywhere she goes, and she's an amazing person, and I know that she would pass it forward," Kendra said.

"She came in my classroom and told me I was prom queen and I was so excited. I was like 'Kendra, you're so cute!' I just love her," Amanda said.

Kendra’s act of giving up her crown to Amanda was a surprise to both Amanda and her family.

"I was just shocked, I couldn't believe it, it's just such a selfless act for someone that's a junior in high school to do something like that, she's beyond her years," said Mellani Belnap, Amanda’s mother.

Amanda has not taken off her crown since Kendra gave it to her and she plans to wear it all week, according to Mellani Belnap.
