WEST VALLEY CITY – An early-morning accident in West Valley City snarled traffic and left thousands without power Sunday.

A single vehicle hit a power pole and snapped it, as well as damaged other power poles along 3500 South in West Valley City.

3500 South was closed in the area until about 8 p.m. after a vehicle with an unknown driver did some damage. Sgt. Paul Gill of the West Valley City Police Department described the destruction.

“The power pole was damaged to the point where power lines came down across 3500 South,” he said. “3500 South from Bangerter to 4000 West was shut down.”

Police officials said the driver fled and left the wrecked vehicle behind. The repairs took about 12 hours, and roughly 2,390 people were without power. At least three power poles in the area were replaced or repaired.
