SALT LAKE CITY – A local non-profit swim team has partnered with a non-profit that provides day care and support services to children in need in order to teach kids to be safe in the water.

Race Swami swim clubs teamed up with Neighborhood House to offer free swim clinics to children who attend Neighborhood House’s after school programs.

The free clinics began Friday, and they taught swimming basics and general water safety tips.

“This is an important opportunity, not only for our kids to learn about water safety, but for us to partner with another local organization to reinforce the team building skills our curriculum emphasizes,” said Shannon Jensen, Education and Training Manager at Neighborhood House, in a press release. “It’s a great way to empower our children, our families, and our community.”

Leslie Motley, Race Swami team president, said the event helps kids achieve something that may otherwise be out of their reach.

“These kids are underserved and may not have had the opportunity to participate in organized swimming lessons,” Motley stated in the news release. “We want our kids to be successful for a lifetime. Swimming is one part of that.”

The swim clinics will serve children in kindergarten through the sixth grade, and children who are willing and able to continue will have the opportunity to join existing Race Swami swim teams, according to the press release.
