SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams, Rep. Eric Hutchings and Sen. Karen Mayne announced Friday a consensus bill that would preserve the future of townships and unincorporated areas.

McAdams said people want good government, not more government.

“That’s what we are trying to do with this proposal is get away from the binary choices of the past and to create options that allow the residents to structure themselves and have the most impact from the local control, but do it in a way that they can still avail themselves of the services they rely on today,” McAdams said.

The boundaries for unincorporated areas will be frozen through 2015 to allow for more discussion.

Residents of Millcreek Township have gathered signatures to become its own city. Its incorporation could potentially be put on the ballot by next year.
