SALT LAKE CITY – After announcing a deal had been reached Friday night only to then say the deal had been halted Saturday, officials with Count My Vote and the Utah Legislature said Saturday night a deal had been made.

According to a joint statement from the two groups, election reform language will be “written as 2nd substitute Senate Bill 54, sponsored by Sen. Curt Bramble and Rep. Dan McCay.”

According to the statement, leaders in both houses of Utah government have “announced their intent to act on the legislation this week.”

County My Vote officials said they will continue to collect signatures until a bill is passed and signed by Governor Herbert.

According to the joint statement:

“The new legislation will preserve Utah’s caucus-convention system and provide a direct primary alternative based on gathering a threshold of voter signatures.  Such a dual system exists in some form in five other states and provides the voting public with the best features of both systems. 2nd Substitute SB 54 will also open primary elections to non-affiliated voters.”

A news conference is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Capitol Presentation Room, and officials said they will offer more details about the reforms in that conference.

FOX 13 News will have more information as it becomes available.
