SALT LAKE CITY -- State lawmakers are discussing ways to protect personal records Friday.

Rep. Ryan Wilcox, R-Ogden, is proposing House Bill 128, which focuses on government getting a search warrant before obtaining electronic data on personal cellphones, laptops and tablets. The bill also protects people who aren't the subject of a warrant, where their information may be involuntarily collected.

The House Public Utilities and Technology Committee unanimously approved the bill, and it will now go on to the full House.
