ANTARCTICA — A Saratoga Springs man finished his journey to the South Pole Tuesday.

Daniel Burton set up camp at the South Pole station and plans to visit the pole site again to the song “Around the World,” according to his blog that documented his journey.

Burton wrote he completed the full distance of his ride, pedaling 100 percent of the trek.

“The South Pole station came into view when I was about 13 nautical miles away,” he said. “When I saw it, I was so overcome with joy! I called home to my wife and lost all control of my emotions. The black dots on the horizon were the most wonderful thing I have ever seen. It was starting to feel like I would never make it.”

Burton started his ride Dec. 2 at Hercules Inlet on the Antarctic coast. He rides in honor of his mother, who passed away a year ago.

Burton claims the world record for the most distance traveled by bicycle toward the South Pole.
