(CNN) — President Barack Obama signed into law on Friday a $1.1 trillion spending bill that will fund the government through the end of September.

The massive bipartisan legislation broke years of forced budget cuts and constant fights over funding in Congress.

The spending plan will roll back some cuts, raise federal worker pay and have a surprisingly broad effect on Americans’ everyday lives, from the light bulbs in lamps to the lines at airport security.

Before signing the bill, Obama spoke to staff at the White House budget office and thanked them for their work, according to a pool report.

He also joked about the size of the bill and that he had to get back to the White House for First Lady Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday.
