SALT LAKE CITY – A group of women with impressive credentials came together Saturday to gain some common ground in the world of Utah politics.

The organization Real Women Run hosted a training meeting for women who are interested in getting more involved in public life, and it’s a state-wide, non-partisan effort.

Attendees on Saturday morning heard from speakers with political experience, like former Governor Olene Walker, and breakout sessions focused on topics like social media and campaign fundraising.

The organization seeks to get more women into elected and appointed political offices. They also encourage women to get involved in campaigns and other political processes.

Anne Burkholder is the CEO of the YWCA of Utah, and she said there is room for change and that Saturday’s event was a bit of a “boot camp” for women who want to get involved.

“In the Utah state legislature, only 16.3 percent of the legislators are women, and there are no women in elected statewide office, and there are no women in Congress,” she said. “So we think that that’s an imbalance, and we think that the state of Utah is actually missing out on some important perspectives, so the purpose of Real Women Run is to remedy that.”

Real Women Run hold other events throughout the year, like a networking social in November and a training meeting in the spring. Visit their website for more information.
