SALT LAKE CITY – A Utah lawmaker is advocating for a raise to the minimum wage, arguing that if the governor of the state gets a raise, so should Utah citizens.

State Senator Jim Dabakis, D-District 2, said he wants to raise the minimum wage by a dollar an hour.

“My proposal is simple,” he said. “The governor gets his 39 percent pay raise, but we tack on a dollar an hour to the minimum wage, which is a hefty seven dollars and 15 cents now… That means, if you work full-time, you’re making somewhere around $1,400 a month.”

Dabakis said the proposed increase would impact about seven percent of workers. According to Utah’s labor commission website, Utah’s minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.
