LAYTON, Utah — Specialized training helped firefighters quickly rescue a horse who fell in an icy pond Wednesday afternoon.

Officials from the Layton City Fire Department were called to an address near 1800 N Fort Ln. at about 5:15 to rescue the horse, who was submerged up to its chest.

Crews used fire hose and “gentle assistance” of a backhoe tractor from the nearby Layton City Public Works Facility to rescue the horse, according to a press release. The rescue operation was completed in under 20 minutes, the press release said.

The horse’s owner brought the animal into a heated barn and wrapped it in blankets, keeping the horse under close observation. The owner told Layton City Fire officials the animal was recovering well.

Firefighter / Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Brandon Anderson was one of the Layton City FD officials who responded to the scene.

Anderson attended Winter Fire School training in St. George earlier this year, and that training proved useful Wednesday afternoon.

At Winter Fire School, Anderson and fellow trainees worked with a full size rubberized training horse in one of their training scenarios, which was similiar to the incident Wednesday, the press release said.
