SALT LAKE CITY --- The local branch of the NAACP paid tribute to anti-apartheid icon and South African statesman Nelson Mandela Sunday.

The memorial service was held in the auditorium of the Salt Lake Library, and it celebrated the life and legacy of the former South African president.

Gov. Gary Herbert spoke at the event, as did Jeanetta Williams of the NAACP and several religious and community leaders.

Herbert said in his speech that Mandela was a persistent and committed man who did all he could to transform South Africa for the better.

"I believe that he is really a testament to the fact and the concept that one man can make a big difference,” Herbert said.” One man, one woman, one individual can make a significant difference for good.”

Mandela passed away earlier this month. He was 95.
