SOUTHERN UTAH -- Directors at a homeless shelter in St. George say they are at its max.

The recent cold temperatures have only made it worse.

“We are housing currently about 20 individuals over and above what we can handle here on capacity,” said Jae Maxfield, executive director of the Dixie Care and Share.

Dixie Care and Share is a small facility but it serves hundreds of homeless people in the area.

“We serve about 600 homeless and those are unique individuals, every year that come through our shelter – our shelter houses 54 people,” Maxfield said.

Maxfield said the overcrowding is an increasing problem, not just in St. George, but nationwide.

There is an average of a 3-percent increase to shelters nationwide, according to a report recently published by the Conference of Mayors.
