ROOSEVELT, Utah — A former nurse at Uintah Basin Medical Center in Roosevelt was arrested after allegedly sexually abusing a patient.

According to a press release from UBMC, a woman came forward on Dec. 5 claiming that a former male UBMC employee sexually assaulted her at the hospital in April.

According to the probable cause statement, the patient was recovering in the hospital overnight after having surgery. The suspect allegedly came into the patient’s room and sexually assaulted her on five different occasions throughout the night.

When UBMC was notified of the alleged abuse, hospital officials said they immediately reported the incident to authorities. After an investigation, officers arrested Joshua Platte Shumway, 26, who worked at the hospital from June 4, 2012 to Oct. 5, 2013.

UBMC officials said when Shumway was hired he passed a background check and had a valid nursing license.

Shumway now faces nine charges including forcible sexual abuse, tampering with a witness, object rape, forcible sodomy and threat of violence.
