SALT LAKE CITY -- The Capitol Theatre in downtown Salt Lake City completed its $33 million renovation project, and it comes at a historic time.

This year marks the old building’s 100th anniversary, but it certainly doesn't look a century old on the inside.

“When you get the good fortune of being able to work on an old building you have to be very mindful and very respectful for everything that was done initially,” said Architect Mike Vela. “So everything we've done in the lobby is only to highlight and clean and enhance what was already there.”

The work includes enhancements like a raised stage for a better view, refinished and reupholstered seats, and a grand lobby to welcome theater goers.

But it didn't come without its challenges: The architects and artisans had a delicate job of updating, without changing the look.

“The dancers are excited because the downstairs facilities are remarkably changed, new space, new paint, new lights, everything feels refreshed and invigorated,” said Ballet West Executive Director Scott Altman.

The Capitol Theatre is only phase one, the ballet center will complete the project and is expected to be finished next fall.
