WEST JORDAN, Utah -- One man is in custody after a standoff in West Jordan Friday morning.

Police said they received a call around 1 a.m. about a domestic case at a home in Kearns. They said the suspect, identified as Thomas Jason Pearson, 37, had left the home just before officers arrived.

Officers said they later learned Pearson was visiting his girlfriend at the home in Kearns. They said Pearson got into an argument with his girlfriend, which lead to a physical altercation. Pearson then retrieved a handgun and threatened to harm himself, and pointed the gun at his girlfriend.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said officers were able to track Pearson to some condos at 4700 West and 6700 South in West Jordan.

"We knew that he was armed, and so once we got over here he wouldn't communicate with us," Hoyal said. "We contacted our SWAT team-- they came out, surrounded the home, ultimately deployed gas into the home. [Pearson] came out and was taken into custody without further incident."

Several neighboring homes were evacuated during the standoff.

Pearson was taken into custody around 5:30 a.m. He will be booked on aggravated domestic assault charges.
