Large portions of Utah to see severe weather through the weekend

SALT LAKE CITY – Severe weather conditions continued into the weekend in Utah, and the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning and a hazardous weather outlook for portions of the state.

The Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the western two-thirds of Utah and southwest Wyoming, including Cache Valley, the northern Wasatch Front, Salt Lake and Tooele Valleys and others, according to the NWS. Click here for the full list of impacted areas.

The warning indicated that “very strong easterly winds are expected along portions of the Wasatch Front through this morning [Saturday]…with gusts in excess of 55 mph expected from Weber County south to northeastern Salt Lake County. Gusty east to northeast winds are also possible across portions of Washington County.

Snow will continue to impact travel over much of central and southern Utah above 5,000 feet through tonight [Saturday]…including along I-70 and highway 89.”

The hazardous weather outlook extends Saturday through Friday. According to the NWS: “There will be accumulating snow across portions of southern Utah above 5,000 feet that will taper off Sunday afternoon and evening.”

A winter storm warning was issued for south central Utah, including Kanab and Escalante.  According to the NWS:

  • “Snow accumulations: Storm total accumulations of 8 to 16 inches above 5000 feet with up to 2 inches near the Arizona border.
  • Timing: Periods of snow…heavy at times…will continue above 5000 feet through tonight [Saturday]…with a rain and snow mix at lower elevations. The storm will gradually diminish late tonight through Sunday morning.
  • Impacts: Winter driving conditions can be expected at times across all routes above 5000 feet…most notably highway 89 north of Kanab.”
