TOOELE, Utah – Police officials in Tooele are reminding residents to take care to secure their property, and the reminder is a result of ongoing burglary and property theft trends in the area.
According to information from the Tooele City Police Department, there have been several reports of unlocked vehicles being targeted by thieves.
Police said criminals will often ignore locked vehicles in favor of easier opportunities, and they said items stolen from unlocked vehicles can be used to commit later crimes, like identity theft and fraud.
According to information from police,
“You can also help prevent property theft by always locking your doors, even if you only go out for a few minutes and make sure your home is well-lit. A timer on the outdoor lights gives the impression there is always someone at home. Keep valuables secured in garages, sheds, gated areas, etc. and not in open carport-like areas or yards. Participate in a program such as Operation Identification, where your personal items are recorded and marked with a unique number to help law enforcement recover your items if they are stolen.”
Police also encouraged residents to contact authorities if they see suspicious activity, including people looking in vehicles or loitering in neighborhoods and parking lots without a legitimate reason. Residents can call 435-882-5600 to report such activity.
