DRAPER, Utah -- More than 3,800 students in Draper gathered to honor veterans Friday.

Students and faculty at the American Preparatory Academy got a big head start on Veterans Day activities with two events.

Students from Kindergarten to 9th grade took turns singing patriotic songs, reading essays and thanking the men and women in uniform who have sacrificed for the United States of America.

The celebration started with a breakfast, where nearly 100 veterans of various ages and from all branches of the military shared a meal with family and friends.

Carolyn Sherette, executive director of American Preparatory Academy, said honoring military members is an important exercise to reinforce the old adage that freedom is not free.

"We have tons of support from our community with our veterans who come and allow our kids to thank them," Sherette said. "This is an opportunity for our kids to learn about the sacrifices veterans made and to thank them."

American Preparatory Academy will hold another pair of events on Veterans Day-- one at the West Valley City campus and another at the Salem Campus.
