LAYTON — Two men were charged with aggravated assault after allegedly firing a gun at a car Thursday night, Layton Police said Friday.

Layton Police received several calls of shots fired in the area of 1062 E. 2525 North at approximately 10:45 p.m. Fifteen minutes later a witness called 911 and reported suspects shooting at a car that was in front of him in the area of Antelope and Sunset Drives.

Officers located the suspected vehicle in the area of 2350 N. 2275 East and conducted a high-risk stop.

Brandon Brown, 20, of Kaysville and Christopher Church, 27, of Layton were removed from the car along with a 17-year-old girl from Layton.

Church was not compliant with officers’ commands, police said. Officers had to take him to the ground before he was handcuffed.

Church and Brown were allegedly shooting at a car with two 17-year-old boys.

The Layton teens drove to the police station and told investigators they met Brown and Church earlier that night at the east end of Antelope Drive to go off-roading. When the teenagers left the area at about 10:45 p.m., they told police Brown and Church followed them and heard shots coming from their car.

Through further investigation it was determined that Church and Brown had allegedly fired multiple gunshots from a .45 caliber handgun while following the teenagers. Police said the gun was found in Church’s car.

Church and Brown were both reportedly intoxicated and driving recklessly.

Church and Brown told police they were taking turns shooting the gun into the air and denied shooting at the other car, police said.

Police determined the 17-year-old girl was not a suspect in the incident but feared for her life because of Church’s reported reckless driving. No injuries were reported from this incident.

Church and Brown were booked into Davis County Jail. Church was booked on charges of two counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm by an intoxicated person, reckless driving, discharge of a firearm within city limits, driving under the influence and resisting arrest.

Brown was booked on charges of two counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm by an intoxicated person, illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor and discharge of a firearm within the city limits.

Brown and Church have discharged a firearm from their car on at least four other occasions in Davis County and Layton, police said.
