Rescuers in Colorado work to free 5 hikers from rockslide; girl, 13, saved

A rescue effort is under way in Colorado to free five hikers who became trapped after a rockslide Monday.

The conditions of those hikers — including whether they are still alive — is not known, according to Chaffee County officials.

A sixth hiker, a 13-year-old girl, was dug from the debris by Chaffee County sheriff’s deputies and flown to Children’s Hospital in Denver. Her condition is also unknown, according to Chaffee County Sheriff Pete Palmer.

The hikers’ names have not been released.

Reports of the slide on a trail at Agnes Vaille Falls in Nathrop — about 120 miles southwest of Denver — came in just after 11 a.m. MT.

Officials said the site of slide is very unsafe, and no one is allowed in the area other than rescuers.

The rescue itself is being “scaled back because of the conditions,” Chaffee County Public Information Officer Dave Cotton told CNN.
