RIVERTON, Utah -- A Utah probation and parole officer died after being involved in a motorcycle crash Wednesday morning.

It happened around 7:45 a.m. near 12600 south and 4425 West in Riverton.

Officers said Marvell Smith, 40, of Herriman was driving his motorcycle eastbound on 12600 South when a South Valley Sewer District sanitation truck pulled out of a shed. The truck backed out in front of Smith, causing him to collide with the truck.

Police said Smith was thrown from the bike during the collision. They said he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and later died from his injuries.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said investigators are now trying to determine if anyone is at fault.

"Some of the things through that investigation that they'll be looking at is the environmental factors that were here," Hoyal said. "Was the sunlight a factor, were there any other conditions that may have contributed to this. Right now, based on witness accounts, it does not appear that speed was a factor."
