The Utah Department of Transportation hosted a statewide event Wednesday, encouraging kids to stay safe on their morning walk to school.

State safety advocates rolled out a contest that is intended to alleviate safety issues. The contest is called "Walk More in Four".

Students are being encouraged to learn walk or ride their bikes to school at least three times a week for four weeks beginning Sept. 3.

Dilworth Elementary School in Sugar House was just one of many schools participating in the event. Students signed the pledge Wednesday at an assembly.

Students will have the opportunity to earn prizes along the way, like bikes and scooters. The top school at the end of the challenge can win $500 and the coveted "Golden Tennis Shoe".

Some parents said the challenge is a good way to get their kids moving.
