SALT LAKE CITY – A man was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after he sustained multiple stab wounds Wednesday just before dawn.

The incident occurred at an apartment near 1700 South and 1100 East, but the victim walked for nearly a block before he found help at the home of a stranger.

Roger Croft said his day got off to a crazy start when a stranger appeared at his home around 5:15 a.m.

“Tap, tap, tap on the window, I turn around, and there's this gal at the window, and she says, 'Please help me, my boyfriend's been stabbed,’” he said.

Croft said he was only awake at the early hour because of a rare bout of insomnia, and he said the victims sought him out because his light was on.

“That was it, which was an amazing coincidence because that's not common for me,” he said.

Croft said he called 911 and did what he could to aid the man, who he said had been stabbed multiple times.

"You could see something major had happened,” Croft said. “You could see the stab wounds in his back, and there were four or five stab wounds in his back and on his shoulders."

Police said the victim was hospitalized in critical condition. He is now listed in serious condition. Det. Rick Wall, Salt Lake City Police Department, said they are working to find out who attacked the man, and why.

"Hopefully he can shed more light on this investigation and tell us exactly what went on,” Wall said.

Wall said the man was stabbed in or near his apartment but was able to run away. The man left a blood trail that shows he staggered for about a block before collapsing in front of Croft’s home.

"They kept their cool under the circumstances,” Croft said of the couple. "She was obviously under a lot of stress, and he was obviously in a tough situation, but he was coherent."

Anyone with information regarding the stabbing is encouraged to contact Salt Lake City police.
