AMERICAN FORK -- The state’s largest school district is stepping up its security in buses to protect students from bullying.

About 50 out of its 300 buses in the Alpine School District have been equipped with surveillance cameras. The district has invested nearly $100,000 to put cameras on 48 buses.

District officials say they will add cameras to about 40 to 50 buses a year until they’re all equipped -- an investment, they believe, will help stop bullying.

The surveillance cameras will help district staff take better care of all those students on the way to and from school every day, said district spokesman John Patten.

The district’s buses carry approximately 21,000 students over 19,000 miles per day. The camera system allows staff to see the door, the driver and get a good look at the 50 students on each bus regardless of where they’re sitting.

Transportation specialist and former bus driver, Shaun Adams said the cameras will be a big help.

“If you got cameras on, you’re doing your job, you’ll be able to bring bullying down in that bus,” Adams said.
