SALT LAKE CITY —  Utahns were able to tour environmentally friendly homes in Salt Lake City Saturday.

The Green Home Tour Council said the purpose of the tours was to educate architects, engineers and homeowners about green methods of building homes.

Some advice for building more environmentally friendly homes include, better insulation, energy-efficient appliances and solar panels.

Connie Maves owns a remodeled green home, and she said it’s just part of doing their part for the environment.

“We decided to do it because we wanted to reduce our environmental impact, and our architect had some experience,” she said.

Daniel Pacheco, executive director of the Utah chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, said the tour gives insight into the future.

I think it’s exciting to see,” he said. “This is a good example of what can be done with greening the home, moving forward in the future, at the same time maintaining the character of an old home in a nice neighborhood.”

Homeowners said building a green home is more expensive initially, but they said it’s worth it in the long run.
