PORTAGE, Utah – A fire in Box Elder County has burned an estimated 11,000 acres as of Saturday night, and on Sunday Gov. Gary Herbert authorized the use of National Guard resources to combat the fire.

Herbert sent National Guard resources in response to an emergency request.

Officials said the State Fire was started by lightning Thursday evening, and as of shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday it was about 38 percent contained.

According to a press release from the Governor’s Office, there are six ground crews fighting the State Fire, and five more crews are on the way. The fire is moving erratically and jumping fire lines due to the high winds.
