MURRAY, Utah -- Cats and kittens are showing up at animal shelters now more than any other time of year, officials said Monday.
To combat the overcrowding the Humane Society is making it easier and cheaper to adopt a feline by charging $5 for a cat and $25 for a kitten.
Cats older than 6 years old are free.
More than 400 cats and kittens have been taken into shelters this month, the Humane Society reports.
"Every day we could have anywhere in the neighborhood of 50 cats or kittens brought into the shelter, surrendered to us and it adds up after a while," said Carl Arky, Humane Society director of communications.
The influx is from fewer people spaying or neutering their cats, officials said.
Shelters run by Best Friends Animal Society and the Humane Society are doing what they can to house the cats.
“That's why we are in this business because we care about what happens to these animals,” Arky said. “We want to shelter them while they are here and we are working every day to find them homes."
Cats can be adopted from the shelter in Murray, located at 4242 S. 300 West.
