SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah Governor Gary Herbert is recovering Thursday after undergoing a skin cancer treatment Wednesday.

According to a press release, Herbert underwent a minor out-patient surgery following a recent diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma, one of the most common types of skin cancer in the U.S. Basal cell carcinomas are described as abnormal, uncontrolled growths or lesions that arise in the skin's basal cells, which line the deepest layer of the skin.

Officials said the surgery went as planned, and doctors expect a full recovery. They said Governor Herbert will continue to fully operate in his official capacity, but will scale back public appearances until the incision heals.
