TAYLORSVILLE -- About 75 residents of an apartment complex in Taylorsville woke up to find their apartments flooded.

Capt. Clint Mecham, Unified Fire Authority, said numerous 911 calls were placed around 5:30 to report flooding at 4545 S Atherton Drive.

Rainwater from a storm Wednesday night and Thursday morning had backed up storm drains at the complex, resulting in the flooding.

Makaila Pearson, who was planning a special celebration for her daughter's first Independence Day, was in tears.

"When I went to turn on my kitchen light to look, my house was soaked. My apartment was just ruined at 5:30 in the morning," Pearson said.

The flooding affected 24 units in three buildings. The residents of those apartments were evacuated and aided by the Red Cross.

"Those that live in the basement apartments especially will be displaced for a number of days, more than likely, because of the water damage," Mecham said.

Officials had to shut down natural gas and electricity Thursday morning for the rest of the apartments in the complex as the water was pumped out.
