YELLOW PINE, Valley County, Idaho – A 2-year-old Utah boy was killed after two planes collided in central Idaho on Friday morning.

A single-engine Piper Tri-Pacer and twin-engine Beechcraft Baron were flying near the Johnson Creek Airport, an air strip near Yellow Pine, Idaho, located about 130 miles northeast of Boise, when they collided, the Idaho Statesman reports.

The Valley County Sheriff’s Office said witnesses reported seeing both planes landing at the same time when one came down on top of the other and both crashed, according to the Idaho Statesman.

A 2-year-old boy from Utah was killed in the crash. His father was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Boise where he is listed in serious condition.

Two men in the lower plane, both from Oregon, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital.

None of the names of the victims have been released.

The Idaho Statesman says that the crash happened during a national fly-in of backcountry enthusiasts and that more than 70 planes were lining both sides of the grass runway at Johnson Creek Airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the crash.
